Lawyers & Exes & Threats: What To Do When He Makes Irrational Threats

he makes irrational threats

On a daily basis without fail, I get a panicked phone call or email about a “threat” one of my clients just received.  “Is it true? Can he really do that?” Inevitably the threat, just like a fever, comes in the middle of the night when you can’t reach anyone for help.

Scared and stressed, you suffer all night waiting until morning to call your lawyer for an answer.  The threats, no matter how scary are usually nothing to worry about.

Keep in mind that I am NOT talking about threats of bodily harm or injury.  Those are different, and none of the below applies to THAT kind of threat.  Any threat of harm to you, your home, or children is one that needs to be reported and acted upon immediately.

These are but just a few common “threats” that are made all too often, and reality is, they seldom come to fruition if ever, and as you get wiser you will know exactly how to respond.

“By the time I’m finished with you, you’ll have nothing”

“You’ll never see your kids again”

“I’m getting sole custody”

“The kids are going to have to testify”

“The house is getting sold and you will be on the street”

“I’m moving out of state”

“I’m quitting my job”

“I’m calling your boss”

“Wait until the Judge finds out that you…”

Sound familiar?

What To Do When He Makes Irrational Threats

Write it down. Yes, like my “lists” this too should be written down. Hearing the threat is very different than seeing it. When your spouse calls, emails or texts you in a rant, all kinds of emotions and buttons are triggered. Under this state, it is very difficult to keep calm and impossible to think straight.

Let the threat come and go. Do not respond to the threat. Do not make a “counter-threat.” Write the threat down. Now read it and think about it. Chances are that within a few minutes of calming down, breathing and reading, you can see that the threat is often unrealistic, unlikely and the product of some other trigger.

A good friend, excellent therapist, and colleague who practices in the field of family therapy once told me, “the dynamics of the marriage are the dynamics of the divorce.” Simply stated, if he was a bully in the marriage he will be a bully in the divorce. If she was controlling in the marriage she will be controlling in the divorce. Do not expect your spouse’s personality or style to change during the divorce, if anything, you will see it reach peak extremes.

Tell your lawyer. Do not believe your spouse’s claims unless your lawyer tells you it is true. In a contested divorce your spouse has two basic goals, first to make your life as difficult as possible, and second, to “win.” If you keep that in mind, you will begin to train yourself not to react to his/her threat. If you react to the threat in a way that your spouse hopes you will, i.e. by caving into unreasonable demands and/or giving him or her anything he/she wants just to “end things” then your spouse’s tactics have worked and the threats will keep coming!

A word about “lawyer letters.” Lawyers write a lot of letters. Some letters are necessary, some not so much, and others to appease their angry and upset clients or make them feel better at your expense. These letters can be very upsetting. I know it is probably easy for me to say it, but truly, do not take them personally. Believe me, your spouse’s attorney isn’t (and your spouse is paying A LOT of money for these letters).

Joe Cordell Receives Missouri Lawyers Weekly ICON Award

Joe Cordell Receives Missouri Lawyers Weekly ICON Award

Cordell & Cordell Co-Founder and Principal Partner and DadsDivorce sponsor Joseph E. Cordell recently was named selected as one of 27 attorneys to receive the ICON Award from Missouri Lawyers Weekly for notable and sustained success and leadership both within and beyond the field of law.

Launched in 2018, the ICON Awards are presented to distinguished
attorneys age 60 and older in recognition of their exemplary careers and
commitment to the Missouri legal community. Honorees must hold or have held a
senior position with significant decision-making authority with the firm or
organization.

The list of 2019 honorees includes founding partners,
judges, and public officials. Mr. Cordell and the rest of the 2019 honorees
will be celebrated at the second annual ICON Awards luncheon from 11 a.m. to 2
p.m. Friday, May 31, at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo. Honorees
also will be profiled in print and online in a special section of Missouri
Lawyers Weekly published May 27.

Throughout his career, Mr. Cordell has worked diligently to
better the legal community in Missouri.

Fighting for fathers’ rights is what motivated Mr. Cordell
to become a divorce lawyer for men. In 1990, while practicing general law, he
realized 85 to 90 percent of his clients were coming to the Cordell &
Cordell firm for domestic relations help.

“I was galvanized by guys who were my clients and trying to get
primary custody of their children. Even though they were the better parent,
they still couldn’t get across the finish line in the courts,” Mr. Cordell
said. “The more frustrated I became, the more incentivized I was to help them.”

As the Co-Founder and Principal Partner of Cordell & Cordell,
Mr. Cordell took this passion and created the largest family law firm focused
on representing men in divorce in the world. The firm has represented tens of
thousands of clients and is powered by nearly 300 attorneys and more than 100
legal staff in more than 100 offices throughout the United States and United
Kingdom.

In 2016, Mr. Cordell founded Cordell Planning Partners, an elder care law firm that provides individuals the resources and information needed to make responsible decisions concerning their estate, assets, health, and well-being as they age.

Mr. Cordell is an active member of the American Academy of
Attorney-CPAs and was installed as the organizations 51st president
in 2014. In 2017, he was elected the AAA-CPA Missouri Chapter President.

Philanthropically, Mr. Cordell and has wife, Yvonne, have
continually given back to the legal community. They generously made a gift
commitment of $1 million in 2014 to establish and endow the Cordell & Cordell
Visiting Professorship at their law school alma mater, Washington University
School of Law in St. Louis, Mo. In 2018, the Cordells pledged $5 million to
Washington University to establish a new institute, the Joseph and Yvonne
Cordell Institute for Policy in Medicine & Law, to study issues of
ethics, medicine, and law. Additionally, the couple will provide annual support
to the establishment.

Mr. Cordell also has prioritized continuous learning and
education throughout his career and is committed to providing these opportunities to
other attorneys through ongoing education both internally and externally.

He is the driving force behind Cordell & Cordell’s annual
daylong CLE Domestic Litigation Forum, which each year gives the local legal
community the opportunity to earn a year’s worth of Missouri CLE credits in one
day for free.

He also developed Cordell College to provide an additional layer
of practice development for Cordell & Cordell attorneys. The internal
curriculum program ensures Cordell & Cordell attorneys are not only highly
skilled in domestic litigation but also in areas such as organization, time
management, and providing communication to their clients that is transparent and
easy to understand.

Walter Hammon (far right) wife Maben and Santa Clara County Supervisor Susan Ellenberg investigated for corrupting family courts.

Investigated: Susan Ellenberg and Walter Hammon

For decades parents and Whistleblowers have complained that Silicon Valley courts have ignored decades of corruption  that allowed pedophiles, abusers and thieves to rob and harm families for profit.

A recent investigation links Santa Clara County’s newest woman Democrat to sex trafficking, and scandalous conduct imposed by the Hammon Legal Dynasty.

Divorce files show Ken Perlmutter is renting a home for $6100 a month, where he is charged with money laundering to avoid obligations during a divorce. Secret recording devices planted near Perlmutter’s rental home have captured conversations with divorce attorneys Bradford Baugh, Walter Hammon and Donelle Morgan, showing how divorce lawyers, custody evaluators and CPAs are using Santa Clara County divorce cases to launder money and fleece families for

Mocking government lawyers and judges on social media brings victims together

Divorce Attorney Valerie Houghton was indicted three years ago and is rumored to being given special treatment by Rosen

Santa Clara County has been violating ADA laws and victims rights for decades. Judge Mary Ann Grilli was previously sued for her unconstitutional conduct, and Grilli’s favorite divorce lawyers; Bradford Baugh, Hector Moreno and Valerie Houghton engaged in rampant tax fraud, as well as abuses of appointments for private judges, custody evaluators and minor’s counsel.

James Towery, former Chief Trial Counsel at the State Bar has been protecting lawyers like Houghton, Baugh and Moreno for decades. Jim Hoover, Donelle Morgan, Walter Hammon  and Bill Dok have been implicated as well, along with newcomers Heather Allan, Jessica Huey, Jennifer Mello, women lawyers willing to get appointments and discipline immunity the old fashioned way: On their backs.

Judge Robert Hayashi  and Judge Lori Pegg have been drinking from the same water cooler with Towery and Jeff Rosen’s wife, Amber Rosen, excepting that disregard of the law would be protected based on the good old boy network operating Silicon Valley Courts. In return, Jeff Rosen has given judges a free pass on public corruption and taxpayer waste investigations. Front and center in the cover up is Jeff Rosen’s top prosecutors including David Angel, John Chase, Jay Boyarsky and even former reporter and public information officer Sean Webby.

One victim of attorney Nat Hales described who  Hales, along with other divorce lawyers including Michael Smith, Neville Spadafore, Robert Redding, James Cox , Ed Mills and Irwin Joseph have rigged divorce cases, bankrupted families and promised favorable outcomes for sex and cash payments in Santa Clara County divorce cases through private judging cases that gouged families and children for hundreds of millions of dollars.

Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen has prosecuted parents for minor child support and custody violations, while he ignored systemic corruption in the county’s family courts.

Victims subjected to years of abuse by divorce lawyers overcharging, selling homes and raiding retirement accounts and who were ignored by mainstream media have turned to social media and memes to tell their stories and expose corruption.

Social media has also  drawn the attention of Facebook, Netflix , and Google, who have faced legal and media attacks for their publishing of stories that many victims know to be true.

Q is seeking stories and support from union employees in law enforcement and county agencies, as well as Oracle, Cisco, Netflix, Google, Yahoo and Paypal in order to expose corruption in Silicon Valley’s family courts. Email us your story, or send us contacts to tech and social media companies willing to help catch these career criminals.
